Op 31 oktober 2019 ging @byfarihah live op Instagram, de eerste beeldroman op de gram. Volg het Engelstalige account van de Afghaanse Farihah. Haar leven wordt op scherp gesteld als ze hoort dat ze terug moet naar haar geboorteland. Farihah droomt van een leven als kunstenaar en uit haar gedachten en gevoelens in haar posts op de gram.
Het project heeft een eigen educatieprogramma. Op 31 oktober trapte het onderwijsprogramma af op de Melanchthon Mavo Schiebroek tijdens het jongerenfestival WIRED. In het schooljaar 2019-2020 werken minimaal vijf scholen in heel Nederland met het programma. Scholen met interesse worden uitgenodigd zich te melden via mail.

On October 31 @byfarihah was launched on Instagram, the first original visual novel on Instagram. Follow the account of Farihah (English language), a teenager from Afghanistan who lives in the Netherlands. Farihah dreams of a life as an artist. She expresses her thoughts and feelings in her posts on Instagram. Her life is turned upside down when she hears she has to return to her country of birth.
The educational program of the project kicked off on October 31 (2019) at the youth festival WIRED - location: the secondary school Melanchthon Mavo Schiebroek. During 2019-2020 approximately 5 schools in The Netherlands use the program during their classes. We are still welcoming new schools and invite them to express their interest by mail.
Wat als je een grote droom hebt, maar je niet zeker bent of die werkelijkheid kan worden? De achtjarige Raffaelo Storm droomt ervan om bioloog te worden. Dieren en de natuur zijn Raffaelo's grootste passies. Het liefst treedt hij in de voetsporen van zijn voorbeeld; bioloog Freek Vonk. Er is alleen een probleem. Raffaelo is doodsbang voor kikkers. Kun je dan wel bioloog worden?!
In deze korte kinderdocumentaire (15 minuten) confronteert Raffaelo zich met zijn angst. Zo ontdekt hij uiteindelijk of hij in de toekomst Freek Vonk achterna gaat of dat er een andere toekomst voor hem in het verschiet ligt.

Eight-year-old Raffaelo Storm from Drachten, a small town in the northern part of the Netherlands in the province of Friesland, has a dream. One day he hopes to become a biologist. Raffaelo is passioned about animals and nature. The famous Dutch biologist and television host Freek Vonk is an inspiration for Raffaelo. Nothing stand in the way for Raffaelo to realize his dream. Or does it...? There seems to be a serious obstacle for Raffaelo that might intervene in pursuing his dream. That is: his fear of frogs!
In this moving portrait of a energetic child full of hope and dreams, we follow the every day life of Raffaelo. We meet his friends and grandfather who all confront him with his dream and fear. Slowly it is unraveled if Raffaelo's fear will indeed prevent him from becoming a biologist or not.
The beautiful Dutch landscape plays an important part in this film. Furthermore, typical traditions from Friesland are shown in the film, such as jumping over small ditches with a jumping-pole or eating typical sugary cake made in this part of the Netherlands.

'Hemels land' is een mozaïekroman over bootmigratie. Voor dit boek woonde ik 1,5 jaar in Italië om onderzoek te doen naar bootmigranten. Het boek verscheen 20 februari 2016 bij uitgeverij Pepper Books.

'Promised Land' is a novel with multiple stories that all centre around a boat refugee who arrives in Italy. The novel depicts both the characters and the beautiful Italian landscape. The book was published February the 20th 2016 at publishing house Pepper Books.
Het werk van Marcel Mauss 'The gift' vormde een van de inspiratiebronnen voor deze film over een kinderfeestje. Wat is het belang van geven en welke rituelen komen er kijken bij een kinderfeestje? De film portretteert een groots opgezet kinderpartijtje, populair bij velen. De film werd in 2014 geselecteerd voor het Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam en op de televisie meermaals uitgezonden bij de NCRV.

The work of Marcel Mauss 'The gift' inspired me to make this film. What is the importance of gift-giving for social relationships? Ten-year-old Hannah from the Netherlands throws a party at an island. She invites her friends by making special, personalised birthday invitations. The girls that will attend the party talk about the parties they go to these days and the presents they will give to Hannah. As the preparations for the party progress, it becomes clear that there will be no boys at Hannah’s birthday bash. The worlds of boys and girls are far apart at this age. The film demonstrates how children forge friendships and how others are included or excluded in this process. The children reveal their inner world and the emotions which are involved. The film was broadcast in 2014 on television (NCRV) and at the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam.

Voor 'Zwarte dauw' deed ik onderzoek naar orthodoxe protestanten in een stadje in de bible-belt. In het boek worden de verschillende bewoners van de stad geportretteerd. Hoe verhouden de verschillende bewoners zich tot elkaar en op welke wijze beïnvloedt religie hun leven, ook indien ze niet geloven? In het boek worden zowel non-fictieve verhalen als fictieve elementen met elkaar vermengd in de stijl van New Journalism.

'Black dew' is a portrait of the residents of a small town in the Netherlands. The majority of the inhabitants are orthodox protestants. In what way is the way of living of the different inhabitants influenced by the strict rules of the faith? The book is written in the style of New Journalism, combining reality and dreamlike non-fictional elements. 'Black dew' was praised by the Dutch press.
Verstilde wereld volgt de ontwikkeling van dementie stap voor stap: van de eerste vergeten sleutelbos tot de allerlaatste dagen. Het boek vormt een belangrijk overzicht voor iedereen die met deze hersenaandoening te maken krijgt. Voor dit boek sprak ik met mensen met dementie en hun familie, en met therapeuten, verplegers, artsen en wetenschappers. Ik heb geprobeerd een gezicht te geven aan de verschillende symptomen en varianten van deze hersenaandoening.

For 'Silent World' I spoke with dementia sufferers and their families, therapists, caregivers and scientists. With compassion I have tried to describe the different symptoms and variations of this brain disorder. What changes? How do people deal with loss and care? What do research scientists say about the importance of a stimulating environment in which art, music and smell can stir the senses? How effective are the current therapies? 'Silent World' follows the progress of the disease, from the first forgotten bunch of keys to the quiet final days. The book provides an overview for anyone who is affected by this brain disorder and their loved ones.

De documentaire 'Hallelujah Amsterdam' onderzoekt of en hoe hedendaagse, jonge muzikanten in Amsterdam in de voetsporen van de bekende zanger Ramses Shaffy treden door lofliederen te schrijven op Amsterdam. De film werd uitgezonden op AT5 in het voorjaar van 2015.

In the sixties the famous and flamboyant Dutch singer-songwriter Ramses Shaffy wrote a song of praise to the city of Amsterdam. Do young singer-songwriters nowadays still write this kind of songs of praise? How do they perceive the city of Amsterdam and how does the city influence their songwriting? 'Hallelujah Amsterdam' is a cinematographic ode to Amsterdam and some of its talented musicians. In the documentary four artists talk about their music and the town they live in. Both the beautiful sides of this vibrant European city, as well as its more luring dark sides, are discussed. Screening: television station AT5, 2015.
